Three rail lines under one roof, two malls, and the Music Center to the west

Nangang Station is a major station shared by TRA (Taiwan Railways), THSR (Taiwan High Speed Rail), and the MRT Bannan Line, with a station building about 592 metres long. Inside the station building there are two shopping malls, CITYLINK and Global Mall; Global Mall opened in 2016, making this the first case in Taiwan of a single station housing two shopping malls. Walking west from the station brings you to the Taipei Music Center, whose North Hall has a performance hall with about 3,100 seats. Nangang has the smallest population of any district in Taipei, yet it's expected to become Taipei's largest office district within the next decade.
In street photos, the buildings here rank 7th out of Taipei's 73 neighborhoods for appearance and 11th for cleanliness — both near the top. If you're after live music, besides the performance hall in the North Hall, the South Hall across from Civic Boulevard has three Livehouses with capacities of 1,600, 800, and 200 people. The Bottle Cap Factory on Nangang Road Section 2 was originally a factory run by the Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau, and reopened after renovation at the end of 2020.
Day-to-day shopping ranks 63rd and medical care ranks 62nd, both near the bottom among Taipei's 73 neighborhoods, so you'll want to scope out supermarkets and clinics ahead of time. Land around the station is still being developed piece by piece, and with the Keelung MRT set to have its terminus here, you can expect construction sites nearby for the next few years.
Nangang was formerly called Nangangzi, and the district's name comes from being opposite Beigang on the other side of the Keelung River in Xizhi. In 1885, someone introduced tea cultivation around Dakeng, making Nangang the birthplace of baozhong (wrapped) tea. The station's history goes back to the Nangang halt established in 1899. In 1943, the Bottle Cap Factory was built on the site of the old Xinzhuangzi Pond, and was taken over by the Monopoly Bureau after the war. In 1956, the provincial government designated part of Nangang as an industrial zone, and factories gradually moved in. Production at the Bottle Cap Factory stopped in 2004; TRA went underground here in 2008, and the THSR extended service to Nangang in 2016. In 2020, the Taipei Music Center opened, and the Bottle Cap Factory also reopened as the "Bottle Cap Factory Taipei Manufacturing Center".
The comprehensive plan for the Keelung MRT was approved by the Executive Yuan in January 2024, covering 15.6 kilometres and 13 stations. Its terminus will be at Nangang, connecting with the Bannan Line, TRA, and THSR; the New Taipei City MRT Bureau expects completion by 2033.

Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
