A street that art and music students have made their own
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
Ekoda Station's north exit side has Nihon University College of Art, and the south exit side has Musashi University, with the station sandwiched between the two schools. Add in Musashino Academia Musicae, whose campus is in Hanesawa outside this neighborhood, and the three schools form a well-known student district.
The people living here are young too. In 2020, about a third of this neighborhood's residents were in their twenties and thirties, compared to only about a quarter for Nerima City as a whole. Nearly seven out of ten households live alone, and over six out of ten homes are rented.
The shops on both sides of the station have history too: in 1968, Matsuya's first store opened on the north exit side; in 1990, Karaoke-kan's first store opened on the south exit side. There are 10 shopping associations around the station, along with scattered live houses and music studios.
Healthcare ranks 51st out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, the highest-ranking item for this neighborhood. Nerima General Hospital is right on the south exit side.
Ekoda Station is served only by Local trains; Express and Semi Express trains pass straight through without stopping. There used to be a level crossing that rarely opened, so in 1999 a north-south underground passage was dug first. Starting in fiscal year 2008, the station building was rebuilt, including an overpass-style station building spanning the tracks and a north-south free passage; the overpass-style station building opened in 2010.
In spring you can walk along Senkawa-dori. The cherry trees lining this road are planted all the way from Ekoda Station to Nakamurabashi Station outside this neighborhood. The Fujizuka (Mt. Fuji mound) inside Sengen Shrine near the north exit is a nationally designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property.
In 2020, about 199 people lived per hectare in this neighborhood. Based on our street photos, the streetscape ranks 366th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, placing it in the lower tier. Within that, sidewalks rank 359th.
Shin-Egota Station on the Oedo Line is a different station, with a different reading too (Ekoda vs. Egota).
In 1922, Ekoda Station opened as a temporary stop reserved for the old-system Musashi High School, and it wasn't until the following year that it began regular operation. In 1929, Musashino Academia Musicae was established; in 1939, Nihon University's Department of Art moved here from Hongo.
The Ekoda Ichibadori Shopping Street Association has developed since the early Showa era as an old shopping street known as "the kitchen of the common people". The Ekoda Market referenced in the association's name opened in 1948 and closed in December 2014.
Compared with the 395 Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide (scores 0–10)
Hospitals with inpatient beds (2020 data), public elementary and junior high schools whose catchment covers this area, high schools and universities within 1 km, stations, parks of 1 ha or more, and large shopping malls and department stores. Many Tokyo junior high students attend private schools, so junior high catchments are only a guide.
Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.
How to read it: yellow = poor, blue = good; grey = not enough data
TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
