01First impressions

Turning off Aoyama-dori into Jingu Gaien, an approximately 300-meter ginkgo avenue runs straight toward the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery, usually turning golden from late November to early December. This avenue is located in Kita-Aoyama.

The parking lot of Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium within the neighborhood is the venue for "Gujo Odori in Aoyama," with the 30th edition in 2026 held at the end of June. The first edition in 1994 was held at Baisoin, the Aoyama family's temple, and moved here only after attendance grew.

These four chome had a population of 6,184 in 2020, with those aged 65 and over making up about 28%, higher than the 16% for Minato City as a whole. Of the 666 households in Kita-Aoyama 1-chome, only 15 in total own their home or rent privately, with the rest falling into categories such as public housing, corporation rentals, or employee housing.

02What works

Greenery ranks 24th, the highest-ranking item for this neighborhood. Public transit ranks 23rd among 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo.

Aoyama-itchome Station has the Ginza Line, Hanzomon Line, and Toei Oedo Line, and Gaienmae Station also has the Ginza Line. Baisoin is right next to the Minami-Aoyama side exit of Gaienmae Station.

03Heads-up

In 2020, this neighborhood had only about 82 residents per hectare. Along Aoyama-dori, the 1-chome and 2-chome of Kita-Aoyama and Minami-Aoyama have a strong business character, home to the headquarters of companies such as Honda Motor and Itochu.

Daily shopping ranks 143rd among 395 neighborhoods; healthcare ranks 169th, the lowest-ranking item for this neighborhood. The buildings from the Gaien redevelopment are scheduled for completion in fiscal year 2037.

04A bit of history

In the Edo period, this area was the large shimoyashiki (villa estate) of Aoyama Tadanari, a senior retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu, which is the origin of the Aoyama place name. In 1926, Meiji Jingu Gaien was completed on the former site of the Aoyama military drill ground.

The subway reached here in 1938, when Gaienmae Station opened under the name Aoyama-yonchome Station and was renamed the following year; Aoyama-itchome Station opened the same year. The Hanzomon Line arrived in 1978 and the Toei Oedo Line in 2000, one after another reaching Aoyama-itchome, making it a station where three lines meet.

05What's coming

The redevelopment area of Jingu Gaien covers about 17.5 hectares, including Kita-Aoyama 1-chome and 2-chome. Tokyo Metropolitan Government has set preserving the view "looking from the ginkgo avenue toward the picture gallery" as a goal, and in September 2024 the developer's revised plan was announced.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
