01First impressions

East Gotanda 1-chome, around the east exit of Gotanda Station, is an entertainment district, while west of the station is a block dense with office buildings and restaurants. To the northeast of the station is a plateau, where Shimazuyama and Ikedayama, two of the Jonan Gozan (the five hills of south Tokyo), are located.

Ikedayama and Shimazuyama were originally the residences of daimyo during the Edo period. This plateau was known early on as a quiet residential area.

The homes on Ikedayama connect with the greenery of Ikedayama Park, while the homes on Shimazuyama surround the green space of the former residence of Duke Shimazu. In 2013, both hills were designated as Category 1 Low-rise Exclusive Residential Districts, capping building heights at 10 meters, which helps maintain the quiet streetscape of the plateau.

02What works

Architecture ranks 20th, the highest ranking in this neighborhood. Healthcare ranks 26th among 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, with universities and large hospitals around the plateau.

Ikedayama Park preserves the strolling-style garden of the Okayama Domain's Ikeda family villa, with ponds and waterfalls arranged along the slope of the plateau.

Public transit ranks 45th. Gotanda Station has the Yamanote Line and the Toei Asakusa Line, and the Ikegami Line also starts from here. The Yamanote Line gets to Shibuya in about 7 minutes and to Shinjuku in about 14 minutes.

In spring, the banks of the Meguro River are a famous spot for cherry blossom viewing, drawing many visitors.

03Heads-up

From our street photos, sidewalks rank 135th, the lowest ranking in this neighborhood.

04A bit of history

The place name already appears in a 1671 land survey register, and is generally thought to come from a paddy field of about five tan in the valley of the Meguro River.

Gotanda Station opened in 1911, and from the Meiji to Taisho eras, many small factories gathered along the upper reaches of the Meguro River through to Osaki, with homes and factories mixed together.

After the war, the area around the station underwent land readjustment, creating a 40-meter-wide arterial road and a station-front plaza.

Up on the plateau, the Edo period saw the residences of the Date family of Sendai Domain and the Ikeda family of Okayama Domain. The Date family's land passed to the Shimazu family in the early Meiji era, and the duke's residence built in the Taisho era is today the main building of Seisen University.

05What's coming

The redevelopment of the No. 3 District in East Gotanda 2-chome along the Meguro River broke ground in November 2023 and is scheduled for completion in 2027. The plan includes about 389 housing units and childcare facilities, along with a riverside promenade lined with cherry trees along the Meguro River, and three plazas will also be created.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
