01First impressions

About a 5-minute walk from Ikejiri-Ohashi Station brings you to Meguro Sky Garden, built on the roof of the Shuto Expressway's Ohashi Junction. The grassy slope, about 400 meters around, climbs gradually from 11 meters above ground to 35 meters. There's an elevator on the south side, so wheelchairs and strollers can get up there too.

Since the garden opened, it has grown wine grapes, and combined with grapes from a winery in Yamanashi Prefecture, about 300 bottles are made each year. To the southwest of the garden is the Meguro River, lined with cherry trees.

Ikejiri-Ohashi Station sits right on the border between Setagaya City and Meguro City, with the station building spanning the three towns of Ikejiri, Ohashi, and Higashiyama; it's one stop to Shibuya on the Den-en-toshi Line. On the Setagaya City side, in Ikejiri 2-chome and 3-chome, about two-thirds of households were single-person households in 2020. On the Meguro City side, in Ohashi, Higashiyama, and Aobadai, children under 15 make up about 14%, higher than the Meguro City average.

02What works

From our street photos, buildings here rank 103rd out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, and cleanliness ranks 132nd.

The stretch to Shibuya is 1.9 kilometers, the longest between stations on the Den-en-toshi Line.

Toho University Medical Center Ohashi Hospital is right in Ohashi.

03Heads-up

For everyday shopping, this neighborhood ranks 186th out of 395 in Tokyo; healthcare ranks 152nd — neither is in the upper range.

Express trains don't stop at Ikejiri-Ohashi, so for commuting you'll need to take a Local that stops at every station. None of the station's four entrances/exits have escalators, but there's an elevator between the platform and the ticket gates. When the Ikejiri area gets hit by heavy localized rain, homes have flooded before.

04A bit of history

The character for "outlet" (shiri) in Ikejiri refers to the marsh where the Kitazawa River and Karasuyama River merged and the pond's water flowed out. Ohashi, meaning "big bridge," refers to the bridge where Tamagawa-dori crosses the Meguro River.

In 1907, the Tamaden (Tamagawa Electric Railway) streetcar line opened, with a station each at Ohashi and Ikejiri. Tamaden had a depot at Ohashi; after the line was discontinued in 1969, it became a bus office, and that land later became the site of the Shuto Expressway's Ohashi Junction — the very one beneath the Sky Garden.

In 1977, the station opened along with the Shin-Tamagawa Line. The station name was originally provisionally set as "Ohashi-Ikejiri," but Tokyu's president at the time, Goto Noboru, thought it was too plain, and it was changed to "Ikejiri-Ohashi" just two months before opening.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
