01First impressions

Coming out of the west exit of JR Kamata station, you're right at an arcade shopping street. The arcade has two passages that together run over 700 meters, with more than 150 shops underneath.

Outside the arcade, the Kamata area has groundwater that wells up as a light brown to dark brown mineral spring called "black water" (kuro-yu), and sento have used it since early on. This kind of hot spring doesn't easily leave you feeling off after a soak, so a lot of people go every day.

In the Ota City Public Health Center's January 2023 list of hot spring facilities, three locations are listed in Nishi-Kamata 5-chome through 7-chome. The ones in 5-chome and 7-chome are inside this neighborhood, while the one in 6-chome is in the neighboring Hasunuma neighborhood.

About 800 meters east is Keikyu Kamata. Between the two stations there's an arcade about 300 meters long, and a lot of people walk through it during the morning and evening commute.

02What works

The commercial area is concentrated within about 1.6 kilometers east-west around the station, and for everyday shopping this neighborhood ranks 35th among 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo. Healthcare ranks 33rd.

JR Kamata station is served by the Keihin-Tohoku Line, the Tokyu Ikegami Line, and the Tamagawa Line. To get to Haneda Airport, you can take the Keikyu Airport Line, or the airport bus that starts early in the morning from the JR east exit.

03Heads-up

In 2020, this neighborhood had about 240 people per hectare. Based on our street photos, cleanliness ranks 369th among 395 neighborhoods, and greenery ranks 358th — the two weakest points in this neighborhood.

04A bit of history

In the Edo period, Kamata was known for its plum blossoms, and Utagawa Hiroshige painted Kamata's plums; even today, the City flower of Ota City is still the plum blossom. JR Kamata station opened in 1904, and in 1920 Shochiku opened Kamata Studio (a film studio) here. The studio moved to Ofuna in 1936, and the former site is now Ota City Citizens' Hall Aprico, which has a model of the studio on B1.

The studio left, but the song stayed: since 1997, Kamata station's departure melody has been "Kamata March".

05What's coming

In October 2025, the first phase of the Shin-Kuko Line (New Airport Line) received certification from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism; the Tamagawa Line will go underground near Yaguchinowatashi and connect near Keikyu Kamata. A rail link will join the two Kamata stations together.

It will still take several years of procedures before construction starts, with the goal of opening sometime between 2038 and 2042. Once it opens, through-service with the Tokyu Toyoko Line and the Fukutoshin Line will make trips to Shibuya and Shinjuku more convenient.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
