Plum blossoms give way to wisteria at Tenjin Shrine, and the streets round the station are lined with gyoza and grilled-offal shops
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
There are many shopping streets around the station, with shops for "Kameido food" like gyoza and grilled offal scattered among them. Kameido Tenjin holds a plum blossom festival from mid-February to mid-March, with over 300 plum trees on the grounds, and from April 25 it switches to wisteria.
During wisteria season, standing on the Taikobashi (a steeply arched bridge), you can look down over the whole trellis of flowers, and there's illumination at night too.
The north exit ticket gates of JR Kameido Station connect directly to Atre Kameido, the building in front of the station. Meiji-dori, which you reach from the north exit, becomes a pedestrian-only zone from 12:00 to 17:00 on Sundays and holidays. There are also older shopping streets like Jusangen-dori and Katori Katsuun.
In 2020, six in ten households in this neighborhood were single-person households, and nearly half of households rented privately owned housing, both higher than the Koto City average.
For healthcare, it ranks 77th among 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, and for everyday shopping it ranks 86th.
Looking at our street photos, sidewalks rank 77th, the highest-ranking item for this neighborhood. Tenjin isn't just about flower-season festivals: on January 24 and 25, the Usokae Shinji ritual takes place, when the shrine hands out wooden bullfinch carvings. In Japanese, the character for "bullfinch" (uso) is a homophone with the word for "lie" (uso), and it's said that it can exchange last year's bad luck for genuine good fortune.
In 2020, about 236 people lived per hectare in this neighborhood; only a little over 30% of households lived in buildings of 11 floors or more, fewer than the Koto City average.
JR Kameido Station is served only by Local trains on the Chuo-Sobu Line. The east exit ticket gates are in an alley one building away from Keiyo Road, so it's not easy to find the first time you visit. Since March 2021, the east exit has been handled by remote staff, with no station attendant present.
In our street photos, cleanliness ranks 263rd, the weakest item for this neighborhood, and greenery ranks only 265th. This area is surrounded by rivers on all sides, and during the great flood of August 1910, the area around Tenjin was submerged to a depth of 8 shaku, about 2.4 meters.
There are several theories about the place name Kameido: one says there was an old well with a turtle-shaped frame called Kame-no-i, and another says that when this place was still an island, it was shaped like a turtle. In 1662, Kameido Tenjin, modeling itself on Dazaifu Tenmangu, dug the Shinji Pond (shaped like the character for "heart") and built the Taikobashi bridge, which was later depicted by Utagawa Hiroshige in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.
The land where Kameido Clock now stands was the Tokyo factory of Daini Seikosha from 1939 to 1993. Later, Sunstreet Kameido was built there, closed in 2016, and Kameido Clock opened in 2022.
