01First impressions

Coming out of the east exit of Minami-sunamachi Station, Minami-suna 3-chome Park stretches from the station all the way to Topyrec Plaza and the area near the Koto Library. The core of Topyrec Plaza is AEON Style Minami-suna, and the library is the central branch of the Koto City Library.

South of the station is SUNAMO, the largest shopping center in the Joto area. Tomigaoka Hachimangu in Minami-suna 7-chome is said to have been founded in 749, and is said to be the origin of Fukagawa's Tomioka Hachimangu, which is why it's also called "Moto-Hachiman".

The original center of this neighborhood was north of the station, where the mall, Koto City Office's Minami-suna branch office, and the library were all concentrated in Minami-suna 6-chome. Walking along the park from the east exit, the AEON, the library, and the Koto City Office branch are all around Minami-suna 6-chome.

02What works

From our street photos, sidewalks rank 43rd out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, and the neighborhood environment ranks 64th.

At Tomigaoka Hachimangu in Minami-suna 7-chome, there's a Fuji-zuka mound built in imitation of Mt. Fuji on the grounds.

For commuting, take the Tozai Line—about ten minutes to Otemachi; heading west, it runs directly through to the JR Chuo-Sobu Line to Nakano and Mitaka, with no transfer.

03Heads-up

Public transit ranks 362nd, because the station is only on the Tozai Line, and Rapid trains don't stop here—only the weekday morning Commuter Rapid trains stop.

Daily shopping ranks 337th; this measures the distance from each neighborhood to the nearest store.

North of the station is a large zero-elevation area that used to be frequently hit by storm surges and other flooding.

04A bit of history

In 1659, Sunamura Shinzaemon came from the Miura Peninsula and reclaimed the land to create Sunamura Shinden; during the Edo period, Sunamura green onions, eggplants, and watermelons were grown here.

From 1928 to 1972, a streetcar ran through what is now the Minami-suna 3-chome intersection, and the stop there was called "Inarimae". This stop name is still used today as an alternate name for the Minami-suna 3-chome bus stop.

Besides the streetcar, there were only buses, and this area was once jokingly called a land-locked island. After the Tozai Line opened in 1969, danchi housing complexes were built on former factory sites, and Toei public housing was built in every town from Minami-suna 1-chome to 6-chome.

05What's coming

Tokyo Metro is rebuilding Minami-sunamachi Station with two platforms and three tracks, in order to ease congestion on the Tozai Line and reduce delays. As of October 2025, the completion schedule has been pushed back from fiscal year 2027 to fiscal year 2031.

The tracks will need to be switched over two more times, and the second switch is expected to require a service suspension.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
