The approach to the shrine honoring Yoshida Shoin, where old wagashi shops and cafés stand side by side
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
The stretch from Shoin-jinja-mae Station to Shoin Shrine is the Shoin-jinja-dori shopping street, which is also the shrine's approach road. Long-established Japanese confectionery shops and greengrocers line the street alongside cafes that take coffee seriously and general goods stores.
A one-minute walk from the station, there's a small park beside the Setagaya Line tracks, marked by a yellow slide. In the park you can hear the trains slowly passing by and the railway crossing bells ringing.
The Setagaya Line is about 5 kilometers long with 10 stations, and the distance between each station is less than 1 kilometer.
For healthcare, this neighborhood ranks 157th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, and for greenery it ranks 251st.
The Setagaya City Library is in Wakabayashi 4-chome within the neighborhood, a 4-minute walk from the station, and is open until 9pm from Tuesday to Saturday. The Setagaya City Office is nearby, and so is the Kokushikan University Setagaya Campus.
To get to Shibuya, take the Setagaya Line to Sangenjaya first, then transfer to the Den-en-toshi Line; Shibuya is the second stop. You need to exit the ticket gates to transfer between these two lines, and the fares are calculated separately.
In 2020, this neighborhood had about 212 people per hectare. Based on our street photos, sidewalks rank 348th out of 395 neighborhoods, the weakest category for this neighborhood; cleanliness ranks 305th, also toward the bottom.
On the Sangenjaya side of Wakabayashi Station, there's the Wakabayashi crossing that cuts across Kan-nana Avenue. There are no barriers here, so trains have to stop and wait for the road signal.
This land was originally the Choshu domain lord's villa. In 1863, disciples including Takasugi Shinsaku moved Yoshida Shoin's grave here from Kozukappara; in 1882, the disciples built a shrine beside the grave.
In 1925, a branch line of the Tamagawa Electric Railway opened to Setagaya, and this station opened on the same day. The current shrine building was built between 1927 and 1928.
In 1969, the section of the Tamagawa Line between Shibuya and Futako-Tamagawa-en was abolished, leaving only this section, which was renamed the Setagaya Line. Because both places have a Shoin Shrine, Setagaya City and the city of Hagi became sister cities in 1996.
The Setagaya City Office in this neighborhood is being rebuilt in phases on its current site. Phase 2 is scheduled for completion in September 2026, and departments are expected to move into the new West Building and East Building one after another from late September through October.
The old No. 2 building and annex building are scheduled for demolition starting November 9. Under the current contract, the entire project is scheduled for completion in April 2029.

Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
