01First impressions

The area around the station is a student district on par with Ochanomizu; along Waseda-dori near the station, restaurants are generally cheap, with especially many ramen shops. Many Myanmar people live here, and there are quite a few authentic restaurants near the station run by Myanmar owners, known as "Little Yangon".

Coming out of the Waseda exit, under the elevated tracks hangs a large painting featuring all the characters from Tezuka Osamu's works, since in the story Astro Boy was born in Takadanobaba. So the departure melody on the Yamanote Line platform is the theme song of Astro Boy.

The most people live on the west side of the railway; Takadanobaba 3-chome and 4-chome combined have about 12,000 people, more than half of the whole neighborhood. To the north, the boundary roughly follows the Kanda River; Shimo-Ochiai on the opposite bank is not included in the neighborhood, with only Takada 3-chome in Toshima City, across the Kanda River, included.

02What works

For convenience, it ranks 40th among 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, and it also ranks 40th for daily shopping.

The JR Yamanote Line, Seibu Shinjuku Line, and Tozai Line all stop at this station. The Seibu Shinjuku Line even stops Limited Express trains here, and there's a connecting ticket gate between Seibu and JR, so you can transfer without leaving the station.

Waseda Shochiku is one of the few revival theaters in Tokyo that mainly shows old films.

03Heads-up

The station is very crowded; JR sees about 180,000 passengers a day, and this station ranks 2nd company-wide for Seibu in passenger numbers. The platform is hard to widen, so crowding during transfers has always been an issue.

From our street photos, buildings rank 231st among 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, in the lower-middle range; sidewalks rank 208th, in the middle.

04A bit of history

In 1636, the Edo shogunate built a riding ground here for training hatamoto (samurai directly under the shogun) in horsemanship, naming it Takadanobaba. However, the actual riding ground was in neighboring Nishi-Waseda; today's Takadanobaba 1-chome through 4-chome were only established as town names in 1975.

The station opened in 1910, with the Seibu Shinjuku Line connecting in 1927 and the Tozai Line in 1964, making it a major station where three lines meet.

05What's coming

In 2022, Shinjuku City set a neighborhood-building policy for the area around the station, and a committee was formed the following year to promote it. There are two proposals, north and south, for the east-west passageway, which were still being compared as of January 2026.

A redevelopment preparatory association was established at the end of 2024 for the approximately 1.7-hectare district on the east side, aiming to secure public spaces such as plazas and improve disaster resilience; the schedule has not yet been announced.

Hospitals with inpatient beds (2020 data), public elementary and junior high schools whose catchment covers this area, high schools and universities within 1 km, stations, parks of 1 ha or more, and large shopping malls and department stores. Many Tokyo junior high students attend private schools, so junior high catchments are only a guide.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
