01First impressions

Ushigome-Yanagicho Station sits underground at the Ichigaya Yanagicho intersection, with Gaien Higashi-dori and Okubo-dori crossing overhead, where traffic is heavy. Along the main roads are shops and apartments; step off the main road and you're in a quiet residential area.

Haramachi has the old Nichiren temple Kokoku-ji, whose large ginkgo tree on the grounds is a Shinjuku City Natural Monument. Ichigaya Kagacho has Dai Nippon Printing's Ichigaya Letterpress Factory, which opened in 2020.

02What works

From our street photos, buildings rank 23rd out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, the highest-ranked item in this neighborhood; cleanliness ranks 45th, also near the top. Public transit ranks 33rd. Going one way on the Oedo Line, it's about 600 meters to Wakamatsu-Kawada Station; the other way, about one kilometer to Ushigome-Kagurazaka Station.

The museum restored the original look of a factory office building built in 1926, displaying movable type and bookmaking, and also runs workshops. Ichigaya Yamabushicho also has the nationally designated historic site, the Hayashi family cemetery, where the Confucian scholar Hayashi Razan's family is buried. At Joei-ji in Ichigaya Yakuojicho, the sanmon gate is a late Edo period structure, designated as a Shinjuku City tangible cultural property.

03Heads-up

Healthcare ranks 111th out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, and daily shopping ranks 100th, the two lowest-ranked items in this neighborhood. In 2020, about 17,000 people lived in this neighborhood, roughly 273 per hectare. About 43% of households own their homes, higher than Shinjuku City's overall 37%.

04A bit of history

After the Great Meireki Fire of 1657, displaced residents who moved in formed a merchant district in Ichigaya Yanagicho; with many temples nearby, there were also many candle wholesalers. Gaien Higashi-dori and Okubo-dori, these two main roads, were opened in stages between 1895 and 1912.

In 1839, Kondo Isami's adoptive father Kondo Shusuke opened the Tennen Rishin-ryu dojo Shieikan. In 2004, a memorial was erected at Ichigaya Yanagicho 25-banchi; another theory places the site in Ichigaya Koracho.

In 1970, exhaust fumes at the intersection were suspected of causing lead poisoning; after inspection, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government found no problems, but the incident led to a citywide ban on trucks over 3 tons entering residential streets. That same year, Toden Line 13 was discontinued, and in 2000 the Oedo Line began running along the former route.

05What's coming

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is widening Natsumezaka-dori (Ring Road No. 4), from Haramachi 3-chome inside the neighborhood to Babashitacho outside the neighborhood, a total of 655 meters, with a planned width of 20 meters. The project period runs until March 31, 2027.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
