At the foot of the 85 Sky Tower, a department store district with markets and a night market

Sanduo Shopping District is one of Kaohsiung's four major commercial districts, alongside Dream Mall, Wufu Shopping District, and Kaohsiung Arena. The district's main axis, Sanduo 3rd Road, happens to be the dividing line between Lingya District and Qianzhen District; Shin Kong Mitsukoshi and SOGO sit on the Qianzhen side, while Far Eastern Department Store and 85 Sky Tower sit on the Lingya side. The blocks behind the department stores are where everyday life happens: you'd shop for groceries at Lingya Public Market or Xingzhong Market, and at night there's Xingzhong Night Market. Heading toward the harbor, 85 Sky Tower rises 378 meters, and the 74th floor is set aside just for taking in the view — on a clear day you can even see Beidawu Mountain in Pingtung.
For convenience, this neighborhood ranks 3rd out of Kaohsiung's 13 neighborhoods, so you generally don't have to go far to run errands. Healthcare access is even better, ranking 2nd. The Red Line's Sanduo Shopping District Station has a platform with high ceilings — you can see down to the platform level right from the concourse, and walking out onto Sanduo Road puts you right at the department stores. If you live around Shengxing Li or Yicheng Li, you can choose between Lingya Junior High School and Shihjia Junior High School.
Daily shopping only ranks 8th here — about a quarter of the blocks are more than 1 km from a supermarket, so budget extra time for grocery runs. 85 Sky Tower stands right on Ziqiang 3rd Road, the neighborhood's main street, but The Splendor Kaohsiung hotel that used to operate inside the tower closed in July 2019, and those hotel floors are still under renovation. The Kaohsiung Main Public Library, often mistaken as a landmark of this area, is actually located in Zhenxing Li, outside the neighborhood boundary.
Lingya was formerly known as Lingzailiao — "lingzai" means fishing net, and the name comes from fishermen back in the day who built shelters along the shore to store their nets. In 1936, the Japanese colonial government announced the "Greater Kaohsiung Urban Plan," widening Zhongshan Road (formerly called Showa-dori), and in 1940 the Tang Eng Iron Works was set up right where the commercial district stands today. Shin Kong Mitsukoshi's Sanduo branch opened in 1993, and SOGO followed in 1996. The year after that, 85 Sky Tower was completed by the harbor. Far Eastern Department Store opened in 2001, and that's when the district's current lineup of department stores took shape. The MRT Red Line opened in March 2008, and Sanduo Shopping District Station opened along with it.
The MRT Yellow Line was approved by the Executive Yuan in March 2022, and civil construction is already underway at various stations. According to the MRT Engineering Bureau's annual report, the revised plan has pushed the timeline back to 2034. The Yellow Line's Sanduo Station is planned for near the intersection of Sanduo 3rd Road and Zhongshan 2nd Road, allowing for a transfer to the Red Line's Sanduo Shopping District Station — though the station name is still tentative.
Compared with the 13 Kaohsiung neighborhoods in this guide (scores 0–10)
Hospitals with inpatient beds (2020 data), public elementary and junior high schools whose catchment covers this area, high schools and universities within 1 km, stations, parks of 1 ha or more, and large shopping malls and department stores. Many Tokyo junior high students attend private schools, so junior high catchments are only a guide.
Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
