01First impressions

From the north side of Kaohsiung Main Station, heading inland along Anning Street, you're in the Houyi Shopping Area, where shops sell clothing, accessories, and leather goods. Behind the commercial area are residential blocks where residents tend to be older — 28.1% are 65 or above, well above Kaohsiung's overall rate of 21.4%. Continuing north to Bo'ai 1st Road, the exits of Houyi MRT Station lead to Shiquan Elementary School, the Sanmin District Administrative Center, Sanmin Park, and Sanmin Junior High School.

02What works

For public transit, this neighborhood ranks 6th out of Kaohsiung's 13 neighborhoods — Kaohsiung Main Station is just outside to the south, and Houyi Station is to the north. If you want to take the TRA, Sankuaicuo Station is just outside the neighborhood to the southwest. Convenience of daily life also ranks 6th, putting it right in the middle among Kaohsiung's 13 neighborhoods. Schooling here is straightforward — all 17 villages fall within the Sanmin Junior High School zone, and both Bo'ai Elementary School and Shiquan Elementary School are within the neighborhood. From Exits 3 and 4 of Houyi Station, head north and you'll reach the waterfront at the Heart of Love River.

03Heads-up

Greenery ranks 12th — aside from Sanmin Park, there isn't much green space within the blocks. Also note that Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital and Sanfeng Central Street are both just outside this neighborhood, so they're not actually part of it.

04A bit of history

The name Sankuaicuo comes from the Ming-Zheng period, when the Wang, Zheng, and Cai families settled and farmed this area. After Kaohsiung Main Station was built to the south, this area, being behind the station, gradually came to be called 'Houyi'. In October 1971, Kaohsiung Main Station opened a back station at the intersection of Bo'ai 1st Road and Jiuru 2nd Road on the north side. With the railway's undergrounding in October 2018, the old ground-level temporary station became history. At the end of December 2024, the canopy and central plaza of Takao Green Hill, built above the station, opened to the public. Sankuaicuo Station, just outside the neighborhood to the southwest, was decommissioned in 1986 and reopened in 2018.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Kaohsiung neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
