Danhai New Town, where the light rail runs through, with large tracts of land in the north left for later development
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
People living in Danhai New Town include not just locals who moved from elsewhere in Tamsui, but also people who work in Taipei on weekdays and use this place as a weekend home or pre/post-retirement residence. Daily life follows the light rail — all 7 stations of the Green Mountain Line from Danjin Beixin Station to Kanding Station are in this neighborhood. Errands, exercise, and school are mostly concentrated around Tamsui District Office Station, with the Tamsui District Office, the Tamsui Civil Sports Center, and Xinshi Elementary School all right next to the station. Further north, there are fewer and fewer houses — that side is still mostly undeveloped planned land.
This place's strength is in its streetscape. In street-view photo surveys, it ranks 1st out of New Taipei's 100 neighborhoods for cleanliness and 3rd for greenery. To get into Taipei, take the Green Mountain Line from Tamsui District Office Station to the terminus at Hongshulin Station, where you can transfer to the Tamsui-Xinyi Line.
Grocery shopping and healthcare are this area's biggest weaknesses: it ranks 86th out of New Taipei's 100 neighborhoods for daily shopping, and 94th for healthcare. About a third of the blocks here are more than 1 km from a supermarket, so without a car, you'll need to plan your shopping route ahead of time. Development here is only partly done: the planned area covers about 1,749 hectares, but only about 446 hectares have completed zone expropriation and development.
In 1992, the government designated the boundaries of Danhai New Town across the agricultural areas of Shalun, Gongsitian, Kanding, and Pidao north of Tamsui, originally planning for a population of 300,000. Phase one construction began in April 1994, but in June 2006 the Council for Economic Planning and Development decided to halt further development, leaving about 446 hectares completed in the end. The Green Mountain Line light rail opened at the end of 2018. In May 2026, the Danjiang Bridge, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, opened, connecting the new town to the Port of Taipei across the river in Bali.
Danbei Road runs along the north bank of the Tamsui River, connecting south from the intersection of Danjin Road and Zhongzheng East Road at the south end of downtown Tamsui to Dadu Road in Beitou, covering a total of 5.45 km. Construction broke ground in February 2024, and the New Taipei City Government expects it to open by the end of June 2029.

Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.
How to read it: yellow = poor, blue = good; grey = not enough data
TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
