01First impressions

The area around the station is lined with shopping streets—six of them centered on the station, each holding its own events, and the streets stay full of people. The bustle is concentrated right in front of the station; walk further out and it's quiet residential streets. It's about a 6-minute walk from the station to Himonya Park, where on weekends you can pay to go boating on the pond.

Under the elevated tracks there's also a street: Gakudai Market has a supermarket, and Gakudai Yokocho is lined with restaurants. The old Gakudai Komichi lane was renamed PARK STREET in 2024, with bookshops and benches—you can linger there even during the daytime.

02What works

Himonya Park is about 4.4 hectares, one of the oldest parks in Meguro City; at the children's petting zoo you can pet rabbits and guinea pigs for free.

For healthcare, it ranks 168th out of 395 Tokyo neighborhoods. The Tokyu Toyoko Line's Express trains stop here, so you can get to Shibuya or Yokohama without transferring.

03Heads-up

In 2020, this neighborhood had about 213 people per hectare. Aside from the area right around the station, most of the Takaban area is residential.

For public transit, it ranks 248th out of 395 Tokyo neighborhoods. Based on our street photos, the sidewalks rank 188th, putting it in the middle of the pack.

Under the maximum-scale rainfall scenario in Meguro City's flood hazard map, the area between Himonya Park and the Tachiaigawa greenway is projected to flood 0.5 to 1 meter, deeper in some spots.

04A bit of history

When the station opened in 1927 it was called Himonya; it was renamed twice, in 1936 and 1943, before settling on Gakugei-Daigaku in 1952. The university itself moved to Koganei City in 1964.

In 1999 there was discussion about changing the station name again; the survey required a two-thirds majority to approve a change, but more than half of respondents were opposed. The station's location, Takaban, is generally believed to take its name from the Takaban estate (Takaban Yashiki) of the Edo period.

05What's coming

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is building Hojo No. 26, a 760-meter stretch from Chuocho 1-chome to Takaban 2-chome. In 2024, Tokyu said there's a plot under the elevated tracks on the north side whose use hasn't been decided yet, and it will be reconsidered once Hojo No. 26 is complete.

In fiscal year 2026, the east-west road on the west side of Takaban Elementary School is scheduled to have its road-edge strip painted. Himonya Park originally planned to work with a private partner to rebuild the boathouse, but because residents were worried about the park's character changing, the City office has paused that plan—boating continues as usual.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
