01First impressions

There are four shopping streets around the station, and the Japanese sweets shops, butchers, and yakitori shops all have ready-made food out front at their storefronts.

There are supermarkets both under the elevated tracks and in the station building that opened in 2018, and 2F of that building is a nursery.

In recent years, some shops have moved here from central Tokyo for the relaxed pace here. Tucked into the residential streets are niche specialty shops, and there are also several vintage clothing shops open until late at night.

02What works

The area around Kamimeguro 4-chome is where the Jakuzure River converges; it was covered over and turned into a green path about 3 km long. In Gohongi 1-chome there's also Ashige-zuka, said to be the burial mound of Minamoto no Yoritomo's beloved horse, now a green space surrounded by old trees.

Healthcare ranks 114th among 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo. Looking at our street photos, buildings rank 94th, the strongest score in this neighborhood.

At Yutenji, elementary and middle school students interview local shops themselves and put together a local magazine. Yutenji Station is on the Toyoko Line, 3.2 km from Shibuya. On weekday mornings during rush hour, trains stop at this station to let Express trains pass first.

03Heads-up

Likewise from our street photos, sidewalks rank 300th among 395 neighborhoods, falling in the lower range. In 2020, about 221 people lived per hectare in this neighborhood.

Tokyo's disaster prevention plan points out that in the area around Yutenji 1-chome and Kamimeguro 4-chome, the fire-resistant land ratio is the lowest in Meguro City, making it prone to fire spread. There are also many narrow roads, making evacuation and emergency vehicle access difficult during disasters.

04A bit of history

The temple Yutenji was founded in 1718; Yuten, the head priest of Zojoji Temple, passed away that same year without seeing it completed. Yukai, who took over, bought the existing Zenkyu-in and became its head priest.

In 1927, when the Toyoko Line built a station nearby, it borrowed the temple's name; the town name Yutenji also comes from the temple's name. The temple itself stands across Komazawa-dori in Nakameguro 5-chome, which is also in this neighborhood.

The roundabout in front of the station, completed a few years after the station opened, has barely changed to this day.

05What's coming

About 27 hectares across Yutenji 1-chome and Kamimeguro 4-chome have been designated by Tokyo as a Disaster Prevention Environment Improvement Area. The plan is to improve disaster-prevention roads and narrow lanes, develop parks, and guide the rebuilding of old houses into structures that resist fire spread.

According to the schedule, this work will still be underway at the end of fiscal year 2030, and is planned for completion by the end of fiscal year 2035.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
