01First impressions

As soon as you exit the ticket gates at Minami-Machida Grandberry Park Station, you're facing the open-air shopping mall Grandberry Park. The station, the shopping mall, and Tsuruma Park were all redeveloped together by Machida City and Tokyu, forming one connected area.

Between the shopping mall and the park is the Snoopy Museum Tokyo, the only overseas branch of the Charles M. Schulz Museum in California. Tsuruma Park covers 7.1 hectares, making it the largest park in southern Machida City.

In 2020, fewer than 30% of households in this neighborhood were single-person households, compared to about 37% for Machida City as a whole; about 70% of households owned their home, compared to about 59% for Machida City as a whole. North of the station, right next to National Route 16, is a residential area made up of detached houses and large apartment buildings.

02What works

Based on our street photos, greenery ranks 72nd out of 395 neighborhoods in Tokyo, the highest-ranking category for this neighborhood; cleanliness ranks 87th, also near the top. The shopping mall has about 240 stores, including a supermarket, an outlet mall, and a movie theater.

Tsuruma Park has many cherry trees planted, and lots of people come to see the blossoms in spring. After the station was renamed in 2019, weekday Express trains also started stopping here.

03Heads-up

Public transit ranks 349th, the weakest category for this neighborhood; healthcare ranks 378th, also near the bottom. Despite having a large shopping mall, everyday shopping only ranks 345th. The residential area north of the station has few commercial facilities to begin with.

04A bit of history

According to legend, cranes once flew to this area, and the place name Tsuruma comes from a phrase meaning "the village where cranes dance". In 1954, the former Minami Village that this area belonged to merged into Machida Town.

The station opened in 1976, taking the "Minami" from the old Minami Village and adding "Machida" to name it Minami-Machida Station. Land owned by Tokyu south of the station was used temporarily at first, and in 1978 a rental baseball field was built there.

Grandberry Mall opened south of the station in 2000; it was originally meant to operate for only about 10 years, but ended up running until 2017. The rebuilt Grandberry Park opened in 2019, and the station was renamed to its current name the same year.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Tokyo neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
