Homes around the district office and Dingpu school
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
Heading southwest from the old city, once you cross Keya River you enter Niupu in Xiangshan District. Both the Xiangshan District Office and Xiangshan Elementary School are in Niupu Village, so locals often find themselves going back and forth along these same streets—handling errands at the district office or picking up kids from school. This area has long since merged seamlessly with downtown Hsinchu, with houses lining the north side of the Western Trunk Line the whole way through.
The streets are pretty clean—this area ranks 4th out of Hsinchu's 9 neighborhoods for cleanliness and 5th for greenery. For schooling, you've got two options: Xiangshan Elementary School is in Niupu Village, while Dingpu Elementary School is actually located in Dingfu Village—the names are easy to mix up. The district office is inside the neighborhood, so paperwork is a short walk away. The densest cluster of housing is around Dingpu Village.
Public transportation ranks 8th: the Western Trunk Line runs right through the middle of the area, but there's no station within the neighborhood itself. To catch a train you'll need to head to Sanxingqiao Station or Hsinchu Station, and Sanxingqiao only serves local trains. Most supermarkets are more than 500 meters away, so you'll often need to hop on a bike or scooter just to buy groceries.
The name Niupu is pretty literal—it means 'cattle meadow,' since this used to be grassland where cattle grazed. The early settlements here included Sankuaicuo, Pujiangwei, Dingniupu, and Xianiupu. In the late Qing dynasty it was called Niupu Zhuang; in 1920 it was renamed Niupu Oaza and placed under the jurisdiction of Xiangshan Zhuang, and in 1941 Xiangshan Zhuang was merged into Hsinchu City. In 1950, Xiangshan split off again to become Xiangshan Township under Hsinchu County, and it wasn't until 1982 that it was merged back into Hsinchu City as today's Xiangshan District. Xiangshan Elementary School traces back to Niupu Public School, founded in 1910, while Dingpu Elementary School wasn't established until 1992.

Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.
How to read it: yellow = poor, blue = good; grey = not enough data
TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
