The station's rear side: Xinjianguo Market at dawn, Dongguang Greenway and old sugar-factory buildings
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
The area behind Taichung Station, on the east side, is customarily grouped into the "Chetou" (station) area within East District. At 5 a.m., Xinjianguo Market opens for business, with 711 vendors selling fresh vegetables, meat, and fish; it's closed on Mondays. LaLaport Taichung, right next to the market, fully opened in 2023, and it's about a 6-minute walk from the North Hall to TRA Taichung Station. Next to the North Hall stands an old building covered in olive-drab tiles — the Taichung Sales Office of Teikoku Sugar. Further south, the green belt along Dongguang Greenway stretches all the way to Dazhi Road.
Greenery here ranks 16th among Taichung's 47 neighborhoods — along Dongguang Greenway you'll find Renhe Park, Luoying Plaza, and Dazhi Park, so there's no shortage of places to stroll. Street-view photos show tidy streets too, with cleanliness ranking 17th. Taichung Elementary School, Dazhi Elementary School, and Dongfeng Junior High School are all within the neighborhood, as is the East District Library. Public transit ranks 21st; although Taichung Station itself lies just outside the neighborhood, the nearest edge is only about 225 meters away.
Healthcare ranks 43rd and everyday convenience ranks 32nd, both in the lower tier among the 47 neighborhoods. The Taichung Station building itself and the old Taichung Rear Station are outside this neighborhood, belonging to the neighboring Taichung Station neighborhood; Zhongxiao Night Market is also outside, belonging to South District.
In 1912, the Teikoku Sugar Manufacturing Company set up its Taichung Factory here; after the war it became Taiwan Sugar Corporation's Taichung Sugar Factory, which stopped processing sugarcane in 1990. The sales office was registered as a historic building in 2007. In 2013 the city government launched zone expropriation for the sugar factory area, and in September 2016 Jianguo Market moved into the former factory grounds. After restoration, the sales office opened to the public at the end of 2019. LaLaport broke ground in 2020 and fully opened in May 2023. The schools in this area have history too: Taichung Elementary School traces back to Akebono Branch School, founded in 1923; its Jianzhong branch class became independent in 1959, forming what is today's Dazhi Elementary School.
Construction on the MRT Blue Line began in June 2025; it will run along Taiwan Boulevard, pass through Taichung Station, and have its eastern terminus at Xinjianguo Market. Two stations are planned within East District — one in Gancheng Li, and one in Quanyuan Li, where Xinjianguo Market is located — with the city government aiming for completion and opening by 2034.

Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.
How to read it: yellow = poor, blue = good; grey = not enough data
TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
