CKS Memorial Hall's plaza hosts exhibitions and performances, and is the nearest green space for local residents
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall grounds cover about 25 hectares, the closest green space for a walk for people who live nearby. On an ordinary day people come here to relax, and the plaza regularly hosts exhibitions and performances. For a full-scale performance, the National Theater and National Concert Hall are also in this neighborhood. Beyond the grounds, Dongmen Elementary School and Dongmen Market are both in the neighborhood, and the market's outer stalls are still trading on the original site.
Greenery here ranks 2nd among Taipei's 73 neighborhoods, and the street environment ranks 5th, so these streets are a pleasant place to walk. For groceries there are Dongmen Market's outer stalls on the original site; the indoor market has moved temporarily to a transitional market building on Hangzhou South Road Section 2, outside the neighborhood. For schools, the four li (boroughs) of Dongmen, Wenbei, Wenxiang and Xinying form the core of the Dongmen Elementary School catchment, and Zhongzheng Junior High School is also within the neighborhood. Hospital care is close too: the East Wing of National Taiwan University Hospital stands at the neighborhood's north-west corner on Zhongshan South Road.
Everyday shopping ranks only 38th, and there isn't much choice for groceries. The name Dongmen is also easy to misread: Dongmen Station is in Yongkang Village, Da'an District, not within this neighborhood. The MRT station here is Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Station, which lies beneath Roosevelt Road Section 1 and is shared with the Nanmen & Botanical Garden neighborhood. The hospital's red-brick old building in the West Wing and NTU Hospital MRT Station are across Zhongshan South Road, in the Taipei Main Station & Chengzhong neighborhood.
The land where Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall now stands was once the base of the Taiwan Army Mountain Artillery Corps, opened in 1905 during the Japanese colonial era. Ground was broken for the Memorial Hall in October 1976; the first phase was completed in 1980 and opened that April. The National Theater and National Concert Hall opened in October 1987, both in Chinese palace style. In December 2007, the plaque on the main gate archway was changed from “Da Zhong Zhi Zheng” to “Liberty Square”; when the Memorial Hall got its original name back in 2009, the archway plaque was not changed back.
Demolition at the original Dongmen Market site is due to start in February 2027 to make way for a new building, which the city government expects to complete in 2030.
Compared with the 73 Taipei neighborhoods in this guide (scores 0–10)
NHI-contracted hospitals, public elementary and junior high schools whose catchment covers this area (estimated from the 2026 school-year village/neighborhood catchment table, treating every neighborhood in a village as equal in size; "Shared catchment" means families there can choose between two or more schools), high schools and universities within 1 km, stations, parks of 1 ha or more, and large shopping malls and department stores.
Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.
How to read it: yellow = poor, blue = good; grey = not enough data
TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
