Taipei Botanical Garden is the heart of this neighborhood, covering about 8.2 hectares. Inside there's a lotus pond, plus royal palms and Alexander palms, none of which are native to Taiwan. Historic sites are tucked into the greenery: the Qinchai Xingtai (Imperial Envoy's Office), a national historic site, and the Herbarium, a city-designated historic site, are both inside the garden, with the National Museum of History next door in the Nanhai Academy complex. Jianguo High School, Guoyu Experimental Elementary School and Nanmen Market sit around the garden, all within this neighborhood.
For people who live here, the Botanical Garden is simply their everyday park, and it ranks 8th out of Taipei's 73 neighborhoods for greenery. Street environment also ranks 10th, and the streets are neat and pleasant to walk. For groceries, head to Nanmen Market, famous for its dried goods and cooked food. For the MRT, use Xiaonanmen Station, which, like Nanmen Elementary School, is in Nanmen Village, the same village the Botanical Garden sits in.
Day-to-day shopping ranks only 37th, with Nanmen Market being the main option for groceries. Jianguo High School, Guoyu Experimental Elementary School and Nanmen Elementary School are all in this neighborhood, so when picking a home it's worth checking how far it is from these school gates.
In 1900, the Governor-General's Office bought farmland outside Xiaonanmen to set up the Taipei Nursery; it was renamed Taipei Botanical Garden in 1921, and the Herbarium was completed in 1924. Jianguo High School was founded in 1898 and moved to its current site on Nanhai Road in 1909. Nanmen Market was converted from open fields into a market in 1907, and renamed Chitose-cho Market in 1922. In 2019 the market moved to a temporary site on Hangzhou South Road, then moved back into a new building on the original site in October 2023.
Phase one of the MRT Wanda Line runs west from Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall Station along Nanhai Road, with Botanical Garden Station at the Heping West Road end of Nanhai Road, right inside this neighborhood. The starting point, Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall Station, sits right on the neighborhood boundary along Roosevelt Road Section 1. Xia'an Station, beneath Xizang Road, falls right in the southwest corner of this neighborhood, at the border with the Nanjichang and Shuangyuan-Xiyuan neighborhoods. The MRT Bureau's listed target completion year is 2027.
