Opposite NTU's main gate, independent bookshops tucked away on upper floors and in basements

Come out of Gongguan Station and you are on Roosevelt Road Section 4, with NTU's main gate on one side and the way to Shuiyuan Market on the other. People call this area the Gongguan shopping district, and with NTU and Taiwan Tech right next door it is full of street food, restaurants, clothes shops and bookshops. Many of the bookshops are hidden in the lanes, and independent bookshops in particular like to open upstairs or in basements, so look up, or down. Food stalls open one by one in the afternoon, and after dark Gongguan Night Market takes over, with even more people out shopping and eating.
Roosevelt Road, Xinsheng South Road and Keelung Road meet here, so there is plenty of choice of buses and MRT, and public transport ranks 27th out of Taipei's 73 neighborhoods. For groceries there is Shuiyuan Market, and there is no shortage of convenience stores at the ends of the lanes.
Supermarkets and pharmacies are further away, so everyday shopping ranks only 61st. Medical care ranks only 58th as well. Three main roads meet here, so if you live beside one of them, factor in the traffic noise. The Taipei Water Park, the riverside and most of the NTU campus are drawn outside the neighborhood, so for a stroll you will need to head out a little way.
The name Gongguan dates from the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty, when the leader of a group of settlers from Anxi built a building (guan) here for trading with the indigenous people and collecting rent. Gongguan was then actually on what is now the Wenshan District side; only when the railway opened Gongguan Station nearby during Japanese rule did the place name move north. NTU, across from the station exit, began as Taihoku Imperial University, founded in 1928. After the Xindian railway line closed in 1965, the name Shuiyuandi ("water source") gradually faded; today it lives on only in Shuiyuan Market, Siyuan Road and the historic Taipei Water Works site next to Gongguan Station.

Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.
How to read it: yellow = poor, blue = good; grey = not enough data
TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
