01First impressions

On weekends, the flower stalls stretch for about half a kilometre under the Jianguo South Road elevated expressway, with over two hundred stalls—making it one of the largest outdoor flower markets in the world. You'll find flowering plants like moth orchids and hydrangeas, as well as carnivorous plants like Venus flytraps, and if you head further north there's also a jade market. On days when the flower market isn't open, Section 3 of Ren'ai Road is really the face of this neighborhood: two rows of big trees shade the road, with a dedicated bus lane running down the middle.

02What works

The streets beyond Ren'ai Road hold their own too: in street photo surveys across Taipei's 73 neighborhoods, this one ranks 12th for greenery and 10th for cleanliness. Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station sits right at the northwest corner, and Da'an Forest Park is just across Xinyi Road—though the park itself falls outside this neighborhood. For schools, there's Xing'an Elementary School, and National Taipei University of Technology is also within the neighborhood.

03Heads-up

For everyday shopping convenience, this neighborhood ranks 32nd—right in the middle among Taipei's 73 neighborhoods. The Jianguo elevated expressway cuts right through the middle, so homes on either side of the elevated section tend to get more traffic noise. The flower market runs between Xinyi Road and Ren'ai Road, and on weekends when the jade market is also open, there's heavy foot and vehicle traffic under the expressway. The space under the bridge normally serves as a car park, but it gets cleared out on Friday evenings to make way for the flower vendors.

04A bit of history

Ren'ai Road was already designated as a tree-lined boulevard in the 1932 urban plan. In 1937, the road was extended across the big drainage ditch at Xinsheng South Road, laid out as a 'three-line road', with a fast carriageway in the middle and slow lanes on either side. The northern part of Section 3 originally dead-ended at the gate of the Air Force Headquarters, and it wasn't connected eastward to Andong Street until 1952. After Taipei was upgraded to a special municipality in 1967, the buildings on the former fast-lane right-of-way in Section 3 were demolished to create a 100-metre-wide garden boulevard, which remains the widest road in Taipei City to this day. The roots of Taipei Tech go back even further, to the Industrial Training Institute established in Da'an Zhuang in 1912. As for the Jianguo flower market, it moved in under the newly built elevated expressway in 1982.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Taipei neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
