01First impressions

The East District is a shopping area that grew up around department stores and malls such as SOGO, Dinghao Boutique City and Mingyao. The lanes have a name of their own too: Lane 161 on Section 1 of Dunhua South Road is where a number of creative companies, clothing brands, and cafes got their start. Come out of Zhongxiao Fuxing Station and department stores tower overhead, with traffic and crowds stretching eastward along Section 4 of Zhongxiao East Road. Turn into the side lanes and the ground floors are almost all restaurants and small shops, one shop sign after another. At the Dunhua South Road junction, the tree-lined central reservation gives you a moment to breathe.

02What works

Zhongxiao Fuxing Station is where the Bannan Line and the Wenhu Line meet, with Zhongxiao Dunhua Station further east and Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Station sitting right on the eastern edge, so public transport here ranks 6th among Taipei's 73 neighborhoods. Everyday convenience ranks 3rd, with shopping and eating out close at hand. Looking for somewhere to eat? Turn off Zhongxiao East Road into the lanes on the north or south side, lined with restaurants and small shops.

03Heads-up

With department stores and lane shops packed so closely together, evenings and weekends get crowded, so if you're considering living near the department stores or in one of the popular lanes, come back and walk it again at night to hear what the street below sounds like. Green space is limited, with greenery ranking 42nd. Dunhua South Road has its tree-lined central reservation, but when walking across the big junctions, keep a close eye on traffic.

04A bit of history

Right up until the mid-1970s, you could still see rice paddies along Section 4 of Zhongxiao East Road. It was only after Sections 3 and 4 of Zhongxiao East Road opened to traffic one after another that the East District as a whole took off. A Wellcome supermarket (Dinghao in Chinese) opened in the basement of the Champagne Building and became the chain's first store, which is why the area was once known as the Dinghao shopping district. In November 1987, Pacific SOGO opened at No. 45, Section 4, Zhongxiao East Road, and added its Dunhua branch in 1994.

How are these measured?

Compared against the Taipei neighborhoods in this guide; metrics without enough data are not ranked. Shopping counts convenience stores plus the nearer of a supermarket or a traditional market (public and private retail markets); night markets, vendor zones and shopping-street shops are not counted. Transit is rail-first with a lower weight for buses.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. About data limits
