A language centre brought food from around the world; old flats line the lanes around the night market
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
NTNU's Mandarin Training Center teaches Chinese to foreigners, and every year more than 5,000 students from over 70 countries take classes here. Starting in the 1990s, because the language center is right next door, plus the cultural background of local residents, the alleys gradually filled up with casual diners, art cafés, and cuisine from all over the world. This commercial area later expanded into the Shida Night Market, covering Longquan Street, Taishun Street, and the Shida Road area. The alleys around the night market are mostly old apartment buildings.
Seeing a doctor or getting things done is pretty convenient here — healthcare ranks 28th out of Taipei's 73 neighborhoods, and everyday convenience ranks 27th. Guting Station is where the Songshan-Xindian Line and the Zhonghe-Xinlu Line meet, and Taipower Building Station is just to the south, so you can pick your route depending on where you're headed. Heping East Road Section 1 cuts through the middle of the neighborhood. Heading east along Heping East Road past Xinsheng South Road, there's a residential area of alleys on the south side of the road where Long'an Elementary School sits; Daan Forest Park on the north side isn't part of this neighborhood.
The night market area stays busy late into the night, so if you live near Longquan Street or Taishun Street, you'll want to factor in the nighttime noise. There are a lot of old apartment buildings in the alleys, and the streetscape only ranks 47th for neighborhood environment. This guide groups the stretch from Guting Station toward Shida together, but that doesn't mean Shida and Guting are interchangeable names — when house-hunting, be clear about whether you're closer to the station or closer to the night market.
NTNU's history traces back to Taipei Higher School, founded in 1922; the Taiwan Provincial Normal College was established in 1946, became Taiwan Provincial Normal University in 1955, and became a national university in 1967. The administration building on the main campus was completed in 1928. The name Guting comes from Guting Zhuang, and after the war this area had a Guting District. In 1990, Guting District was dissolved, and the area east of Roosevelt Road was merged into Da'an District. The Shida commercial area grew up around that same period; later, due to resident protests, dining stopped being the mainstay, and today there are more clothing and beauty shops than restaurants.

NHI-contracted hospitals, public elementary and junior high schools whose catchment covers this area (estimated from the 2026 school-year village/neighborhood catchment table, treating every neighborhood in a village as equal in size; "Shared catchment" means families there can choose between two or more schools), high schools and universities within 1 km, stations, parks of 1 ha or more, and large shopping malls and department stores.
Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.
How to read it: yellow = poor, blue = good; grey = not enough data
TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
