Taipei's biggest night market is right here, with both Jiantan and Shilin stations inside the neighborhood
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
Shilin Night Market is the largest night market in Taipei City. It originally grew up around food stalls and vendors, and nowadays it's also a popular spot for locals' nightlife. Coming out of Jiantan Station, the whole area across the street between Wenlin Road and Jihe Road is the night market zone. Further north, on Zhongzheng Road, is Shilin Station, and between the two stations are lanes where old neighborhood blocks and homes are mixed together.
Because this neighborhood has both of these stations, getting into the city centre on the Tamsui-Xinyi Line doesn't really require a transfer. Healthcare and everyday convenience both fall in the middle of the pack: medical care ranks 39th out of Taipei's 73 neighborhoods, and everyday convenience ranks 39th. The eastern side of the neighborhood reaches the Shilin Official Residence, which served as Chiang Kai-shek's residence starting in 1950; the residence building was designated a national historic monument in 2005.
The night market area gets very crowded after dusk, so if you live near Jihe Road or Wenlin Road, you'll need to allow extra time going out and coming home at night. In the street photo rankings, sidewalks rank 56th, one of the weaker scores for this neighborhood.
Shilin's old name was Bazhilan, which means "hot spring" in the Ketagalan language. In the late Qing dynasty, this area had a strong culture of scholarship, with many residents passing the imperial examinations, which is why it was renamed Shilin, meaning "a forest of scholars". Shilin Market was established in 1909; before that, trading was concentrated on the square in front of Cixian Temple. In 2002, the market vendors moved to a temporary market across from Jiantan Station, and after renovation, they moved back between 2011 and 2012.
The North Section of the MRT Circular Line will have Station Y26 on Zhongzheng Road, which will connect with Shilin Station on the Tamsui-Xinyi Line for transfers. According to the Department of Rapid Transit Systems' August 2026 update, the scheduled completion year is 2031; the opening date will be announced after the preliminary and final inspections are passed.

Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.

TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
