A relaxed neighborhood where the old American military houses left Tianmu with a lasting American style
The closest neighborhoods in the same city.
Tianmu has a reputation for an easygoing, elegant pace of life with a touch of the foreign about it. That international feel goes back to the US military housing of the 1950s, and Taipei American School and Taipei Japanese School are still nearby today. The shops lean heavily towards imported goods: there's a Shin Kong Mitsukoshi on Tianmu East Road, and a Dayeh Takashimaya on Section 2 of Zhongcheng Road. Lanya, to the south, is often included in the broader definition of Tianmu.
Shidong Market in the Lanya area was once rated a five-star market by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, which makes grocery shopping easy. Tianmu Sports Park has a baseball field and sports grounds, good for a weekend run. The further north you go, the steeper it gets, until you reach the foot of Yangmingshan; if you fancy a hike, carry on north onto the Shuiguan Road Trail and up into the hills. Healthcare ranks 34th out of Taipei's 73 neighborhoods, so it's worth checking which nearby clinics cover the specialties you use.
There's no MRT station in the neighborhood: the nearest, Zhishan Station, is just outside to the southwest, and Mingde Station is outside to the west, across Huangxi Creek in Beitou District, so the further north you live, the more you'll rely on buses. Public transport ranks third from the bottom among Taipei's 73 neighborhoods, and everyday convenience only 62nd. Factor in the slopes up north too: walking home with shopping is harder work.
In 1933, Nakaji Toshiro built Tianmu Shrine, dedicated to Tianmu, on a hillside east of Sanjiaopu in what was then Shilin Town, and that is where the name Tianmu comes from. From the 1950s, US forces were stationed in Taiwan and much of their housing was in this area; the American way of life they brought has stayed.

NHI-contracted hospitals, public elementary and junior high schools whose catchment covers this area (estimated from the 2026 school-year village/neighborhood catchment table, treating every neighborhood in a village as equal in size; "Shared catchment" means families there can choose between two or more schools), high schools and universities within 1 km, stations, parks of 1 ha or more, and large shopping malls and department stores.
Maps show the shops and the sights. What a street is like, you only know by walking it. TidyMap uses AI street imagery analysis and public facility data to turn each area's street environment and everyday convenience into something you can compare. Search an address and look at the street outside first.
How to read it: yellow = poor, blue = good; grey = not enough data
TidyMap rates the street environment and everyday convenience. It does not assess the home itself, safety, noise or actual living experience. Street environment scores use AI assessments of imagery; convenience scores use public facility data.
